Resort

The medieval lakeside town of Zell am See has a very different atmosphere than most other Austrian ski resorts. Located on the waterfront surrounded by towering mountains and part of the Europa Sport Ski Region. Skiing in Zell am See gives you access to over 130km of pistes, 80km of which belong to the Zell ski area. Most of the centre of the ski resort of Zell am See is pedestrianised, creating an excellent environment and allowing you to easily work your way around the numerous après-ski bars, or visit the many shops in the ski resort.

Skiing and boarding

With its multitude groomed trails, World Cup downhill, off-track runs, and glaciers, Zell Am See offers the complete Alps ski experience. Most of the best runs are accessed via the Schmittenhohe lifts. There is an outstanding network of intermediate trails, but experts can challenge themselves on the World Cup runs and a superb run down from the Kapellenlift summit. Nearby Kaprun, located 10 kilometers from Zell Am See, is famous for its high-altitude glacier skiing. Reach the Alpin Center via a cable car, or the Stanseilbahn tunnel route. Ski from there, or those with strong legs can go all the way to the 10,000-foot top station via aerial tram. more>>

Apres ski

There is an illuminated toboggan run in both Zell and Kaprun. If you are feeling adventurous, try an Alpine sightseeing flight. There is a bowling alley in the centre of Zell. Horse-drawn sleigh rides are available. more>>

Resort overview

Zell am See sits on a flat semicircular piece of land that juts into the lake. Cream-coloured buildings huddle around the well-preserved 13th-century church of St. Hippolyt, and the city tower, which dominate Zell, giving it the air of a medieval mountain town rather than a busy ski resort. Today the streets are still lined with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
