Year round mountain lovers paradise with beautiful scenery

Sprawled at the foot of the Aguille du Midi, the ski resort of Chamonix is a traditional old town with year round mountain activity. Although the ski area is spread out over 11 disconnected sections, they are all worth exploring and almost all the runs are above the tree line. Catching the bus to the different ski areas is the way of life in Chamonix, so having a car can be an advantage. The centre of Chamonix is car free and there are plenty of shops, cafes and bars to sit in and relax as your eyeline is instinctivly drawn to the peaks above you.

The skiing and boarding

Spread out over the valley, the ski resort of Chamonix has everything to offer. Beginners have a nursery area fairly seperate from the rest of the slopes so need not worry about people speeding past. Intermediates have a good choice of places to refine their skills - Col de Balme above La Tour offers good cruising runs and the Brevent and Flegere areas both offer a good mix of blues and reds.

The ski resort of Chamonix is however, one of the great resorts for an expert skiier. To make the most of the area, and to avoid risking your life, hiring a guide to show you some of the best off piste is worth it. The famous Vallee Blanche is one to do if you arean intermediate plus, looking for an adventure and some stunning scenery. There are plenty of other great runs off the Grand Montets cable car, a variety of runs from the Brevant cable car, and from La Tour, there are some good off-piste runs back to the village or towards Vallorcine.more>>

The apres ski

Apres ski in the ski resort of Chamonix is centred around the pedestrian area of the resort with many bars getting busy as the lifts shut. The Choucas is a popular spot as is The Pub, Bar du Moulin and Wild Wallabies. The party contines until the early hours with drinking at the Cantina, Dicks T Bar and still at The Choucas! more>>

Resort overview

Nestling in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the ski resort of Chamonix lives and breathes mountain history. Home to the first Winter Olympics in 1924, Chamonix combines an internationally renowned ski area with an elegant, cosmopolitan and bustling town centre. With its cobbled streets, majestic old buildings, rich heritage and open squares, Chamonix is much more than just another ski resort.

It has kept much of its original mountain charm and retains a very French atmosphere. The town is in the centre of a string of villages spread out along a valley cutting deep through the Alps; the ski resort of Argentiere is six miles up the valley, beneath the renowned Grands Montets slope, and the ski resort of Les Houches is  a few miles below.

Skiing in Chamonix offers so many opportunities for all levels of skiers.

The ski resort of Chamonix is famous for its spectacular cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi. Constructed in 1955 it was then the highest cable car in the world. Chamonix is also a haven for advanced skiing and snowboarding. The Vallée Blanche glacier runs down from below Mont Blanc and the Aiguille du Midi to the valley. This spectacular route can be skied or snowboarded and is not for the fainthearted!

Aside from that, the valley has about six separate ski areas, including Le Brévent (a short but steep walk from the town centre), La Flégère (at Les Praz), Les Planards (ski area for beginners and early intermediates), Les Grands Montets (at Argentière) and Domaine de Balme (at Le Tours). These areas cater for all level of skier and many of these provide challenging terrain, especially off-piste, with runs down to Switzerland.
