Lost skiier filing a law suit against British Columbian ski resort

Gilles Blackburn is filing a law suit for negligence after losing his wife and spending 9 days lost in the back country close to Kicking Horse resort in British Columbia. Mr Blackburns wife died of exposure after 7 days lost in freezing conditions.

Natasha Richardson helmet ad is banned

The British advertising watchdog has banned an advertisement by skiwear4less.com. The advert showed an image of Natasha Richardson as part of an effort to sell ski helmets. The email sent to clients showed an image of Natasha Richardson with the words: "We regret to inform you that British actress Natasha Richardson has died in hospital this morning, after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in Mont Tremblant, Canada."
The email was banned after two compaints and was deemed 'likely to cause offence'.

Marmot Basin is instaling new speedy chair lift

One of Canada’s most significant ski lift development projects for winter 2009 -10 is now fully underway at Jasper’s Marmot Basin ski resort. Equipment and work crews have arrived in Jasper and have begun work at Marmot Basin on what will be the longest new high- speed quad chairlift in the Alberta Canadian Rocky Mountains. Tree removal has now been completed establishing the right of way for the ski lift and parts for the new lift are arriving daily by transport truck. The new quad chair will be ready for opening day November 2009.

University lecturer Carmen de Jong has been deleted from Chambery universities website after making her views on artificial snow canons public. Two years ago de Jong wrote a controversial artical about the artificial snow being produced by machines to cover the increasingly bare ski slopes. He claims that artifical snow production is draining the regions water and using excessive amounts of power. With snow being the number one money maker in the region her claims have amounted to a silencing campaign from the local goverment and the very university she works for. |

Finlay Mickel, one of Great Britain’s most successful downhill skiers announced his retirement from the sport on Tuesday. After two years plagued with injury Finlay has retired from competitive downhill skiing as he does not feel he can compete with the world's best. |
Crystal drop over 1000 beds from winter resorts

The largest ski tour Operator in the UK, Crystal has dropped 52 chalets from its European program. This follows the move to remove all of their Chalets in North America. Crystal’s chalet move is sending a clear message about how it expects the next year to go for business.
A good thing about this move is this now means other Tour operators will no doubt pick up some chalets to increase their market share….if they dare!

Chacaltaya, in Bolivia, the only ski resort in Bolivia has closed its operation for good. Now only a chunk of ice the resort which was first opened in 1939 and serviced by a fast and "extremely difficult to ride" cable tow. The newest highest lift is in ade Dragon Ski Mountain in Yunnan Province, China. Is global warming starting to effect our snow? |
